Overview of Health Care Reform
As discussed previously, Republicans are on shaky ground when discussing health care reform due to their lack of attention during their six years in power. (They are even on shakier ground when arguing conservative principles, thanks to their support of the largest expansion of government benefits in American history.)
In one sense, this allows Republicans to start anew --- and the place to start is to be intellectually honest with the American people. President Obama has stated on numerous occasions that he will be honest with the American people, but it is now clear that promise will not be kept. A one trillion dollar price tag that will allegedly be made up by illusory cost savings is a disservice to any honest debate.
The hard truths of health care are the results of primal human behavior intersecting with market economics --- and only by regulating or subsidizing one of those two facets will the cost reductions sought by all parties be achieved. To understand the interplay between these factors, the following posts will consider these questions and then move toward solutions regarding how best to tackle the health care issues --- and their associated costs --- in a manner that preserves conservative principles, addresses the fears of Americans and maintains cost control.
